Worley Ltd. (North Sydney, Australia) has entered into an agreement with Liquid Wind, a Gothenburg-based company, to provide design and engineering services for the NorthStarH2 e-methanol facility in Östersund, Sweden. This marks Worley’s second collaboration with Liquid Wind, following a pre-FEED contract in 2021 for another e-methanol project. The new facility, being developed on behalf of energy company Uniper, is projected to produce over 100,000 metric tons of e-methanol annually, contributing to the decarbonization efforts of the shipping and chemical industries.

The focus of Worley’s work will be the pre-FEED (front-end engineering design) phase, specifically on the balance of plant, which includes all the essential supporting systems and infrastructure needed for the operation of the facility. The NorthStarH2 project is aligned with global goals to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional methanol through the production of e-methanol, which is synthesized using renewable electricity and captured carbon dioxide. This facility’s output will help reduce carbon emissions in key sectors like shipping, which heavily depend on fossil fuels.

Worley’s Nordic team, based in Gothenburg and Copenhagen, will spearhead the project, with additional support from the company’s global hydrogen experts and its Global Integrated Delivery team in India. This multidisciplinary collaboration will ensure that the design phase integrates the latest advancements in hydrogen and e-methanol technology, while leveraging Worley’s global execution capabilities.

Jan Narvestad, Senior Vice President for Worley Nordics, expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, "We bring technical competence in the e-methanol space, along with the execution capabilities necessary to drive this project from the initial design phase through to the final investment decision and successful construction." He emphasized the importance of the NorthStarH2 project in advancing global decarbonization efforts and reducing the world’s dependence on fossil fuels. The partnership with Uniper and Liquid Wind underscores Worley’s commitment to supporting innovative clean energy solutions, which play a crucial role in addressing climate challenges across industries.

By contributing to the development of the NorthStarH2 facility, Worley is strengthening its position in the growing green hydrogen and e-methanol markets, helping pave the way for a more sustainable future.

Worley began over 50 years ago as a small engineering consultancy in Australia. Today, the company is bridging two worlds: advancing the shift toward sustainable energy sources while continuing to support its customers in delivering the energy, chemicals, and resources essential for society's current needs. Leveraging its established reputation as a trusted engineering partner in the energy, chemicals, and resources sectors, Worley is evolving into a solutions provider, guiding its partners and communities toward a more sustainable future.
