The agreements lay down the foundation for TOMRA Feedstock to deliver a steady stream of top-notch raw materials to support OMV Group's recycling endeavors. OMV is set to utilize feedstock sourced from TOMRA Feedstock plants at its ReOil® facilities in Austria, while Borealis will process feedstock supplied by TOMRA at its mechanical recycling facilities in Europe.

"This agreement exemplifies the potential when pivotal stakeholders collaborate to create a substantial market impact. Through our technology, we can reclaim post-consumer plastics that would otherwise be lost to incineration. This material holds value and deserves a second chance at life. We are excited to partner with OMV and Borealis to significantly contribute to closing the plastic circularity gap," remarked Volker Rehrmann, Executive Vice President and Head of TOMRA Recycling.

The feedstock will originate from TOMRA's groundbreaking sorting facility, currently under construction in Germany. This facility, expected to be operational by the end of 2025, will boast an input capacity of 80,000 metric tonnes annually. TOMRA Feedstock has developed an innovative process to convert pre-sorted mixed post-consumer plastic waste—materials typically destined for landfills or incineration—into distinct polymer types. These purified fractions can subsequently undergo additional processing at mechanical and chemical recycling facilities, including those managed by OMV and Borealis.

Daniela Vlad, OMV's Executive Vice President of Chemicals & Materials, remarked, "Through this enduring supply agreement, we will procure feedstock for our ReOil® technology, enabling the transformation into premium sustainable raw materials for plastics manufacturing. This endeavor represents a notable stride towards fostering a circular economy for plastics."

Borealis intends to utilize the feedstock in its operations, leveraging Borealis' Borcycle™ M technology. This innovative process converts polyolefin-based post-consumer waste into high-performance polymers tailored for various industries such as automotive, energy, infrastructure, healthcare, appliances, and consumer goods.

" This agreement signifies another significant step forward in Borealis' commitment to increasing the amount of recycled content in a wide range of high-performance products. Our customers will have the opportunity to further integrate value-added, recycled plastics into their product portfolios," commented Craig Arnold, Borealis' Executive Vice President of Polyolefins, Circular Economy Solutions, and Innovation & Technology.

OMV is shifting its focus towards becoming a prominent sustainable fuels, chemicals, and materials enterprise, prioritizing circular economy solutions. Presently, the company operates within three integrated business segments: Energy, Fuels & Feedstock, and Chemicals & Materials. By progressively transitioning to low-carbon operations, OMV aims to attain net zero emissions by 2050 at the latest. With revenues reaching EUR 39 billion in 2023, OMV boasts a diverse and skilled workforce comprising approximately 20,600 employees worldwide.
