Expanding on the achievements of the Stena Germanica in 2015, Lloyd’s Register (LR) and Stena Line will collaborate on retrofitting two fast roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) vessels with methanol propulsion.

The conversion project will involve upgrading the Stena Superfast VII and Stena Superfast VIII Ro-Ro ferries, currently serving the Scotland to Northern Ireland route between Cairnryan and Belfast, to utilize methanol dual-fuel propulsion. These vessels will also undergo a transfer of class to LR.

Within the scope of the project, the retrofit will involve the conversion of two out of the four primary engines in each vessel to operate on a blend of methanol and MGO (Marine Gas Oil). Additionally, the ships' bunkering, storage, fuel supply, and ancillary systems will be adjusted to accommodate methanol.

The Stena Germanica, classified by LR, stands as the sole retrofitted methanol vessel in operation, offering invaluable insights for the conversion of Stena Superfast VII and Stena Superfast VIII within this project.

Paul Herbert, Principal Technology Specialist at Lloyd’s Register, expressed, "The initiative to equip the Stena Superfast VII and VIII with methanol dual-fuel propulsion underscores the joint dedication of Stena Line Ferries and LR to sustainability and the adoption of alternative fuels for a more eco-friendly future. Drawing on our knowledge and insights from the successful conversion of the Stena Germanica in 2015, we are ready to introduce another innovative solution that will lead to more environmentally friendly and efficient ferry services."

Ian Hampton, COO Fleet & Government Affairs at Stena Line Ferries, remarked, "In our ongoing efforts to decarbonize our operations, we remain steadfast in our belief that methanol represents a viable alternative fuel to realize this objective. Leveraging Lloyd’s Register's expertise and experience gained from their support in the conversion project of the Stena Germanica nine years ago, we anticipate their continued support in retrofitting our existing vessels. This endeavor will enhance their sustainability by curbing CO2 emissions and promoting the technological advancements necessary for our ongoing transition towards fossil-free shipping."

LR's latest report, "Fuel for Thought: Methanol for Passenger Ships," demonstrates the growing technical viability of methanol for shipowners. Nevertheless, prioritizing infrastructure and investment is crucial for its widespread adoption. LR has furthered its proficiency in this domain through initiatives such as its collaboration with Green Marine, a Danish consultancy specializing in methanol as marine fuel. This partnership emphasizes seafarer training for methanol handling and includes LR's approval in principle for the NACKS methanol-fueled 81,000 DWT bulk carrier.
