PyroGenesis Canada Inc., a leading technology firm specializing in advanced plasma processes and sustainable solutions aimed at mitigating greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), is excited to announce that its subsidiary, Pyro Green-Gas Inc. (“Pyro Green-Gas”), has secured contracts worth $2.5 million (US$1.8 million). These contracts entail the engineering, design, and fabrication of a thermal swing adsorption (“TSA”) system. This system will be utilized for dehydrating pure oxygen generated from electrolyzers at the Varennes Carbon Recycling (“VCR”) plant, a significant biofuel production project currently being constructed in Varennes, Quebec.

The VCR project, valued at $1 billion, is spearheaded by a consortium comprising major corporate entities like Shell, Suncor, Proman, and Enerkem. Supported financially by both the Quebec and Canadian governments, this initiative entails the construction of Canada’s largest biorefinery. With the capacity to process up to 200,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste and residual biomass, the facility will yield 125 million liters of commonly used chemicals and value-added biofuels, including methanol. Operating on clean electricity, the plant will harness renewable green hydrogen and oxygen produced onsite by one of the world’s largest electrolyzers.

“This announcement underscores our ongoing dedication to offering sustainable technological solutions that enhance environmental quality by managing and mitigating hazardous air pollutants and greenhouse gases,” remarked P. Peter Pascali, President and CEO of PyroGenesis. “By harnessing the innovative technologies offered by Pyro Green-Gas, such as thermal swing adsorption and pressure swing adsorption, the safe capture and recovery of CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions become achievable.  This capability is pivotal for initiatives such as the VCR project, which aims to reduce more than 170,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions annually and 4.25 million tonnes over its 25-year lifespan. This is equivalent to removing 50,000 passenger vehicles from the road, and we eagerly anticipate the possibility of expanding our involvement as the project progresses.”

Pyro Green-Gas anticipates finishing the delivery by the fourth quarter of 2024.

Pyro Green-Gas's advancement of technologies like thermal swing adsorption and gas separation systems contributes to the company's three-tiered solution ecosystem. These align with economic drivers crucial to global heavy industry. Within the Energy Transition & Emissions Reduction tier, the company integrates flaring technologies alongside gas purification, separation, and conversion technologies. Additionally, fuel switching, utilizing the company's electric-powered plasma torches, aids heavy industry in minimizing greenhouse gas emissions and reducing fossil fuel usage.

PyroGenesis Canada Inc., an innovative high-tech firm, stands at the forefront of pioneering plasma processes and sustainable solutions aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) while offering economically viable alternatives to conventional industrial practices. The company specializes in the design, development, manufacturing, and commercialization of advanced plasma technologies, which have garnered significant interest from prominent industry leaders across four major sectors: iron ore pelletization, aluminum production, waste management, and additive manufacturing. Operating from its Montreal headquarters, PyroGenesis boasts a skilled team of engineers, scientists, and technicians, supported by expansive manufacturing facilities spanning over 3,800 m2 and 2,940 m2. By continuously advancing technology and adhering to rigorous quality standards, PyroGenesis maintains a competitive edge in the global market.
