MHI and Chiyoda Join Forces for CO2-Capture Technology Licensing

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) has finalized a General License Agreement (GLA) with Chiyoda Corporation (Chiyoda). Under this strategic partnership, MHI is licensing the "KM CDR Process™" and "Advanced KM CDR Process™" to Chiyoda. These technologies were developed collaboratively with The Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc. Additionally, Chiyoda is authorized to offer Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) services to customers for CO2 capture projects within Japan.

In this partnership, MHI seeks to bolster its Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) expertise to facilitate the development of CO2 capture projects in Japan, where the demand for carbon dioxide capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) is anticipated to rise. Chiyoda, renowned globally for its engineering prowess, boasts extensive experience in EPC for diverse plant types and possesses a robust track record in infrastructure engineering, including liquefaction and injection facilities. Together, the two companies will harness their individual strengths to address decarbonization requirements across various industries.

MHI is broadening the geographical reach and competencies of its CCUS business through partnerships with a diverse array of global companies. This collaboration represents the most recent endeavor of MHI aimed at the Japanese market, enabling the company, thanks to this agreement, to undertake numerous projects independently and through strategic alliances with its partners.

Since 1990, MHI Group has collaborated with Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc. to develop the KM CDR Process™ (Kansai Mitsubishi Carbon Dioxide Recovery Process) and the Advanced KM CDR Process™. As of May 2024, the Company has successfully implemented 16 plants utilizing the KM CDR Process™, with two additional plants currently under construction. The Advanced KM CDR Process™ utilizes the KS-21™ solvent, incorporating technological enhancements over the amine-based KS-1™ utilized in all 16 commercial CO2 capture plants delivered thus far. This advanced version offers improved regeneration efficiency and reduced deterioration compared to KS-1™, demonstrating excellent energy-saving performance, decreased operational costs, and minimal amine emissions.
