The government is planning to come up with a new road map to produce methanol from coal. For the time being methanol is used with blended gasoline, but methanol is the priority of government. The production of methanol in India is expected to reduce India’s crude oil import. The latest estimate shows that the total import bill of crude oil in India is INR 6000 Billion.

According to the NITI Aayog member V K Saraswat, the government has planned to promote conversion of high ash coal into methanol by coal gasification, which can be used as transportation fuel and cooking gas.
