On September 24, 2024, Kemira and International Flavors & Fragrances (IFF) announced the successful completion of a market-entry scale industrial polymer plant, marking a significant milestone in their strategic cooperation aimed at developing renewable alternatives to fossil-based products. This new facility, located within Chemigate Ltd's Finnamyl biorefinery in Kokemäki, Finland, is equipped to produce innovative renewable polymers tailored for Kemira’s customers. The production process is based on IFF’s patented Designed Enzymatic Biomaterial platform technology (DEB™).

Operated by Chemigate, a member of the Berner Group, the new plant represents a collaborative achievement that both companies celebrate as a response to increasing market demand for sustainable materials. Kemira and IFF are actively exploring further avenues to expand their exclusive partnership, including potential investments for a manufacturing joint venture dedicated to large-scale production utilizing the DEB™ technology platform. Plans for a full-scale unit are under consideration for the IFF biorefinery site in Kotka, Finland.

Sampo Lahtinen, Senior Vice President of Growth Accelerator at Kemira, expressed enthusiasm about the completion of the market-entry scale production unit. He noted the positive feedback received from the market, emphasizing the necessity of this new technology. Lahtinen stated, “We are excited to continue creating momentum for use in strategic markets such as paper and board packaging, and water treatment.” This aligns with the growing trend toward sustainability and eco-friendly alternatives in various industries.

Christian Lenges, IFF Venture Director, highlighted the ongoing collaboration between IFF and Kemira in bringing renewable products to market. He pointed out that the commissioning of the market-entry scale facility will enable both companies to support their customers in the initial adoption of these innovative materials. Lenges added, “Our companies are committed to leading the material transformation in Europe by providing new competitive alternatives to fossil-based products and driving the growth of the bioeconomy through breakthrough biotechnology-driven innovation.”

The completion of this industrial polymer plant marks a crucial step forward in the transition toward sustainable materials, as Kemira and IFF continue to innovate and respond to the evolving demands of the market. Their joint efforts signify a broader commitment to sustainability and the advancement of the bioeconomy.
