Indiana Expansion: Nucor to Break Ground on Steelmaking Project

Indiana [US]: Nucor, the electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaker, is finally breaking ground today at its Crawfordsville, Indiana plant for a highly anticipated expansion of its flat-steel mill. Indiana governor Eric Holcomb is also slated to attend the ground-breaking ceremony as per his office's schedule for the day.

As per the company's announcement in February 2022, a $290 million investment will be made for the construction of a construction grade continuous galvanizing line and a prepaint line. The project is expected to take two years to complete and will increase the company's production by 300,000 short tons (st)/yr and 250,000 st/yr for the galvanizing and prepaint lines respectively.

Nucor recently achieved a significant milestone by finishing construction of a new galvanizing line with an annual production capacity of 500,000 short tons at its flat-rolled mill located in Hickman, Arkansas in December 2021. Additionally, in 2020, Nucor also put into operation its 72-inch galvanizing line with the same production capacity of 500,000 short tons at its flat-rolled mill situated in Gallatin, Kentucky.

The steelmaking company is embarking on a project to construct a state-of-the-art flat-rolled mill with a production capacity of 3 million metric tons per year in West Virginia. This mill will include the installation of two galvanizing lines, enabling the production of 1.1 million metric tons per year of galvanized steel.
