Exolum Set to Pour €20 Million into Biofuel Storage Terminal Construction

Exolum is set to construct a new terminal for storing biofuels and various bulk liquid products at the Port of Bilbao, adjacent to its existing facility in Zierbena. The initial phase of this project, with an earmarked investment of 20 million euros, is scheduled to commence in 2025 and is anticipated to be operational by 2027. This development will not only enhance the company's service offerings but also augment its capabilities for storing and processing products in the region.

The construction of the new terminal will unfold in multiple stages. The initial phase will focus on building a bund housing 5 tanks, boasting a combined storage capacity of 29,000 m3. This state-of-the-art infrastructure will feature advanced safety measures and environmental safeguards.

From its inception, the new terminal will incorporate port connectivity infrastructure, facilitating vessel entry and departure operations, as well as connectivity to other terminals, Exolum facilities in Zierbena and Santurce, and the company's extensive network throughout Spain. This enhancement will enable the company to broaden the spectrum of operational services provided, including receiving and storing biofuel and various raw materials with differing qualities, maintaining requisite temperatures, blending, and subsequent vessel loading or dispatch to other terminals.

In subsequent stages, capacity and services will be expanded by tailoring logistics to the unique demands of each type of raw material and enhancing flexibility.

An essential component of Exolum's strategy involves dedicating resources to logistics investments in Spanish ports that align with the energy transition objectives, ensuring supply efficiency and safety. Situated within the Port of Bilbao, this terminal serves as a vital nexus for the transportation of biofuels and raw materials, fostering synergies with Exolum's ongoing initiatives at ports like Gijón and Coruña to adapt to the evolving energy landscape. Additionally, its proximity to key Atlantic hubs like Rotterdam, Antwerp, and The Hague facilitates trading activities and will bolster the growth of industrial enterprises associated with biofuels and raw materials. This, in turn, will support local refinery operations and other industrial facilities, contributing to overall industrial growth.

As per Jorge Guillén, Exolum's Spain Region Lead, this marks a significant stride in Exolum's strategy of investing in Spain to establish and manage the necessary logistics infrastructure for emerging sustainable fuels, thereby advancing energy transition goals.
