ENEOS Corporation (ENEOS) and Preferred Networks, Inc. (PFN) disclosed on May 24, 2024, the commencement of continuous autonomous operation of an atmospheric distillation unit for crude oil processing since January 2024. This autonomous operation, facilitated by an AI system, is presently underway at the ENEOS Kawasaki Refinery.

The AI system, a collaborative effort between ENEOS and PFN, streamlines the intricate and large-scale operations of oil refinery plants, traditionally reliant on experienced human operators. Since 2018, ENEOS and PFN have been jointly developing AI systems aimed at enhancing the safety and stability of plant operations, thus diminishing the reliance on technicians' varying levels of expertise.

The AI system overseeing the atmospheric distillation unit consistently monitors 24 crucial operational parameters and simultaneously adjusts 13 valves to mitigate fluctuations caused by changes in crude oil types and throughput. Through its operation, the AI system has exhibited superior stability and efficiency when compared to manual control methods.

ENEOS and PFN intend to roll out the jointly developed AI systems to additional ENEOS refineries and subsequently offer them as a comprehensive solution to external entities. This collaborative effort not only aims to facilitate the achievement of United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 9, which emphasizes the construction of resilient infrastructure, promotion of inclusive and sustainable industrialization, and encouragement of innovation.

ENEOS Group stands as Japan's premier energy company, boasting manufacturing and sales facilities spanning the globe. Operating across the energy and non-ferrous metals sectors, the Group covers a wide spectrum from upstream to downstream activities. In fulfilling its duty to ensure a consistent supply of energy and materials presently and in the future, ENEOS is committed to achieving a carbon-neutral society through the transition in energy sources. This endeavor not only presents a monumental challenge for humanity but also signifies an opportunity for ENEOS and the ENEOS Group to enhance corporate value by steadfastly embracing this challenge.

Preferred Networks, Inc. (PFN) pursues cutting-edge software and hardware advancements through a vertically integrated strategy, encompassing the entire AI value chain from chip development to the creation of supercomputers and generative AI foundation models, culminating in the delivery of solutions and products. Established in March 2014 in Tokyo, PFN has leveraged its technologies across diverse sectors including manufacturing, transportation, healthcare, entertainment, and education. Notably, PFN's MN-3 supercomputer, powered by its innovative MN-Core™ AI processor, achieved the top position in the Green500 ranking for energy efficiency three times consecutively in 2020 and 2021. PFN also maintains subsidiaries specializing in materials discovery, robotics, and foundational models.
