Azomures in Romania Plans to Restart Ammonia Production in October

Romania's Azomures, a renowned fertiliser producer, has unveiled its plan to resume production at its Ammonia III facility, commencing in October. The resumption will see the facility operating at 50% of its total capacity, a significant development made possible by recent natural gas purchase contracts. This announcement carries substantial implications for both the company and the agricultural sector, highlighting Azomures' pivotal role in supporting Romania's agricultural activities.

The Ammonia III plant, an impressive industrial complex, possesses an annual production capacity of 1.6 million tonnes. Notably, the majority of this production, ranging between 80% and 85%, is designated for the Romanian agricultural market. This steadfast commitment underscores Azomures' vital contribution to the nation's agricultural landscape.

Josh Zacharis, CEO of Azomures, has outlined the company's strategic objectives, which revolve around maintaining ammonia production with natural gas as the primary raw material. In addition to ammonia production, Azomures aims to sustain the operation of its NPK (Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium), Ammonium Nitrate, and CAN (Calcium Ammonium Nitrate) plants, contingent on favorable market conditions. Zacharis has also acknowledged the persistent historical volatility experienced in both the natural gas and fertiliser markets, a factor that introduces an element of uncertainty into the company's future plans and operations.

Azomures' production activities underwent a series of disruptions in recent times. In December 2021, the company was compelled to suspend production due to the soaring energy prices, a decision prompted by challenging market conditions. Production resumed in April 2022, marking a hopeful return to operations. However, this resurgence was short-lived, as the company once again suspended production in June of the same year. The fluctuating market dynamics and economic challenges during this period were instrumental in shaping Azomures' decisions.

One significant facet of Azomures' corporate history is its affiliation with Ameropa, a Swiss agribusiness conglomerate. This partnership has been in place since 2011, and it has played a pivotal role in shaping Azomures' operations and market presence. The company operates its industrial platform on an extensive 100-hectare site situated in the city of Targu Mures, which serves as the epicenter of its production activities. As of the end of 2022, Azomures boasted a dedicated workforce of 960 employees, according to the most recent data available on the finance ministry's website.
