In March 2025, prices of Boric acid experienced an incline in the overall Asian market influenced by the recent US tariffs and Canada’s proposed regulatory measures under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA). In the agriculture sector, boric acid serves as a micronutrient to enhance plant growth and as a pesticide to control insects. It also serves majorly in the paint industry to enhance the durability, safety and performance of paints.
In Japan, a key exporter country US has announced the imposition of tariffs affecting imports mainly from Mexico, Canada and China. These tariffs don’t directly target Japan, the resulting shifts in global trade dynamics could influence boric acid prices in the Japanese market.
Further compounding the situation, in early March, the Canadian government proposed adding boric acid and precursors to part 2 of Schedule 1 under Canadian Environmental Protection Act. The proposal was based on scientific assessment that identified potential risk to both human and environment which particularly concerning prolonged exposure and bioaccumulation.
If this thing approved, the proposal by the Canadian government could lead to stricter production regulations and potential export limitations which affect globally the supply of boric acid. As per previous year's reports which indicate a 29% surge in boric acid imports in the Japanese market due to heightened demand in agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and manufacturing, now the current situation also has tendency to the prices in Japan. As Canada is the key player in the boric acid supply chain, Japanese importers must closely monitor this situation to understand the market trend more accurately.
Similarly, India has seen a surge in boric acid imports as manufacturers take advantage of shifting global trade flows. India is highly dependent on boric acid for various industrial applications, particularly in agriculture, pharmaceuticals and manufacturing. With India’s growing economy and increasing demand for high-quality industrial goods, securing a steady supply of boric acid has become a prime concern. The conditions arising by the US and Canada may affect the supply and demand conditions in India to some extent. Whereas Market experts also predict a short-term boost in supply and competitive pricing, but long-term stability will depend on how regulations evolve in Canada and other key exporting nations.
Looking ahead ChemAnalyst anticipates as the global regulatory landscape continues to shift, Japan and India's boric acid markets are poised for continued transformation, with businesses adjusting strategies to maintain a secure and cost-effective supply chain.
