Texas, USA: The market for the most often utilized source of agricultural fertilizer, Potassium Chloride (KCl), also known as muriate of potash or Muriate of Potash (MOP), has demonstrated continuous decline in the US domestic region.

Due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, fertilizer manufacturers are facing a scarcity of MOP, one of the key raw ingredients used in mixing Russian agricultural input. Russia and Belarus together make up two-fifths of global Potassium Chloride exports. Delayed Potassium Chloride supplies have disrupted the whole business, leaving farmers without input for weeks or months until alternatives are found.

Additionally, global natural gas prices have fallen by more than 70% in the previous year, owing to a complex interplay of supply and demand dynamics determined by geopolitical events, weather patterns, technical breakthroughs, and global economic conditions. As a result, the production costs of Potassium Chloride have decreased further.

Meanwhile, the fall in raw material Potash prices reduced the production costs of Potassium Chloride end-use fertilizer products, namely granular Muriate of Potash (MOP). Furthermore, fertilizer input costs have decreased dramatically in recent weeks due to ongoing drops in natural gas prices.

In reaction to market conditions, the world's largest Potassium Chloride producer has paused plans to increase output indefinitely and will cease development on its clean ammonia plant in Geismar, Louisiana.

The corporation in the United States planned to increase potash output capacity to 18 million tonnes, but "unprecedented volatility" over the previous year and a half prompted it to modify its plans.

According to the market participants, the demand continued to rise in main regions, particularly in North America; however, the recovery process in offshore markets has been more uneven. Potassium Chloride prices have fallen with the resumption of supplies from the main supplier, Belarus. However, exports of Potassium Chloride from the nation remain below pre-Russian invasion levels.

Nutrien also stated that a dockworker's strike at the port of Vancouver has had an impact. It reduced the output of Potassium Chloride at its Cory Potash mine in Saskatchewan and warned that weaker exports would reduce its full-year earnings.

Fertilizer firms have started constructing ammonia facilities around the United States Gulf of Mexico to take advantage of Inflation Reduction Act subsidies and existing export infrastructure. It might be many weeks before the backlog is cleared and the supply chain resumes normal operations.

According to the ChemAnalyst database, Potassium Chloride prices are anticipated to improve in the upcoming months as the demand for the product improves amid increased production costs and enhanced consumer demand.
