US Base Oil Prices Rise 10.4% in early April 2026 Amid Supply Disruption

Base oil markets in the United States moved higher into spring as supply tightness and stronger downstream buying supported higher offers. The initial period remained stable, but geopolitical frictions and firmer crude dynamics intensified through March, prompting buyers to pre-buy ahead of list changes and exporters to re-route cargoes. Seasonal blending and agricultural needs provided steady underpinning to demand. Trade-route diversions, export outflows and elevated feedstock costs left the market exposed to rapid swings at the turn of the quarter. Demand remained the primary driver, with automotive and industrial sectors leading the tightening, while marine and metalworking provided solid support. Automotive procurement for modern engine oils and rapid uptake of low-viscosity blends forced blenders to chase additional base oil grades, tightening premium pools. The industrial sector's rising synthetic-blend uptake also supported restocking ahead of blending season. Short-term indicators pointed to upside pressure, with inventory accumulation, route diversions, and strength likely to sustain gains, despite potential shifts in freight and geopolitics.

Selenis has effectively manufactured recycled PET chips using terephthalic acid sourced from Circ®, a textile-to-textile recycler based in Virginia. The chip production took place through a series of batches at Selenis' pilot plant in San-Giorgio, Italy. By utilizing inputs recovered from polycotton textile waste, Selenis has created high-quality PET chip, which has been further processed into DTY yarn. This yarn will play a crucial role in product development as Circ prepares for additional capsule launches. Selenis is leveraging the success of this initial collaboration phase and is committed to advancing towards an offtake partnership to support Circ's inaugural industrial facility. Eduardo Santos, Head of Corporate Strategy at Selenis, remarked that the monomer synthesis showed a performance comparable to virgin terephthalic acid. He expressed optimism about the consistent quality of Circ's monomer output and anticipated future commercial success. Santos pointed out that the Circ partnership complements Selenis's existing mission and goals for a more sustainable textile industry. He further stated their anticipation of expanding upon this collaboration and providing support for Circ's forthcoming commercial production trials.
