Germany: The strategic partnership's objective is to create environmentally friendly PETG resin that will hasten the use of materials derived from sustainable, renewable forests in plastic applications and lessen reliance on fossil fuels. Due to its superior transparency, PETG has gained FDA approval and is widely utilized in various applications such as heat shrink sleeves, bulk dispensers, cosmetics and personal care packaging, and durable goods.

To produce partial BioPETG, UPM Biochemicals will provide Selenis, a division of the IMG Group, with its brand-new sustainable Bio Mono-Ethylene Glycol (Bio-MEG), known as UPM BioPuraTM. UPM BioPuraTM is made from hardwood that has been responsibly harvested and certified in the forests near Leuna, Germany, where the business is constructing the first industry-scale biorefinery in the world that will turn woody biomass into next-generation biochemicals. Manufacturers will have the ability to redefine their net zero ambitions and considerably lower their scope 3 emissions by simply switching from a fossil-based product to a renewable drop-in ingredient thanks to the biomass, which doesn't compete with food resources.

UPM Biochemicals is dedicated to the sustainable transformation of the packaging sector and is working closely with partners like Selenis to create fresh, environmentally friendly uses for the biochemicals that will be made in Leuna. Both businesses share the goal of reducing the reliance of the sector on new fossil fuels and promoting a circular economy that is net zero.

It gives us great pleasure to work with Selenis. According to Michael Duetsch, Vice President of Biochemicals at UPM, Selenis pursues a strategy to continuously lower the CO2 footprint of its products. Partnerships like at the core of a greener, more sustainable chemistry.

Collaborate with Selenis to provide top-notch services for their clients, empowering them to innovate in the direction of environmentally friendly packaging options with a much smaller Carbon impact. Utilising bio-based materials like UPM BioPuraTM together with a steadily rising percentage of recycled materials will be crucial if the packaging industry is to achieve its long-term goal of a more environmentally responsible future.

Selenis concentrates on product innovation on creating goods that are 100% recyclable in the PET stream and has ground-breaking technology that upcycles plastic trash into new polymers, substituting recycled polyester raw material for fossil-fuel feedstocks. With no performance compromises, Selenis converters and brand owners can now alter their goods' Carbon footprints by including recycled and bio-based materials. Further assisting brand owners with their decarbonization objectives, Selenis is investing in self-generated solar energy that will enable the use of entirely green energy in the polymer production process.

Innovation efforts in markets where there is greater need for recyclable solutions due to shorter product lifespans, making end-of-life solutions more crucial. There are two areas where brand owners place a high priority on circularity: packaging and cosmetics.

Creating products that adhere to sustainable criteria for recyclability, eco-resource efficiency, and eco-friendly compositions to improve their circularity is crucial as move towards becoming a regenerative company. Working together across the value chain to develop practical solutions that assist the development of a circular economy and significantly reduce plastic waste, as demonstrated by new relationship with UPM.
