Topsoe, a renowned leader in carbon emission reduction technologies, has recently inked a pivotal contract with CF Industries, a global heavyweight in ammonia production, to provide licensing and engineering support for a front-end engineering and design (FEED) study. This study aims to explore the feasibility of establishing a cutting-edge low-carbon ammonia plant in Louisiana, USA.

CF Industries, in collaboration with Mitsui & Co., Ltd., a prominent player in ammonia marketing, is spearheading the evaluation of this groundbreaking project. The envisioned plant holds immense promise, as it seeks to produce low-carbon ammonia, positioning it as a vital decarbonized energy source. The versatility of ammonia, whether in its low-carbon form or as an e-fuel, is anticipated to be instrumental in the global pursuit of net-zero emissions. Its adaptability lies in its ability to leverage existing infrastructure for transportation and its diverse applications, spanning from fuel and hydrogen carrier to aiding in the decarbonization of industrial processes like steel and cement production.

Henrik Rasmussen, Topsoe's Managing Director for The Americas, expressed, "We are confident that low-carbon ammonia holds the key to ushering in a net-zero future. Our technology presents a cost-efficient pathway to manufacturing low-carbon ammonia while facilitating carbon capture on an industrial scale. The enduring partnership between CF and Topsoe, built over numerous decades, fills us with pride as we deepen our collaboration through this recognition."

The SynCORTM technology not only facilitates ammonia production but also enables cost-effective carbon capture. Developed by Topsoe, SynCOR™ stands as the company's proprietary technology grounded in advanced autothermal reforming principles. With a legacy of 300 years of collective, secure operation, SynCOR™ is frequently preferred for large-scale ammonia production owing to its maturity and its ability to minimize both capital and operational expenses. SynCOR Ammonia™ represents a groundbreaking advancement in the ammonia industry. In contrast to the conventional approach reliant on tubular steam methane reforming and an air-fired secondary reformer, SynCOR Ammonia™ employs a process centered on oxygen-fired autothermal reforming.

Topsoe's overarching mission extends beyond individual projects, encompassing a broader commitment to combatting climate change. Through a holistic approach rooted in scientific research and innovation, Topsoe endeavors to empower its customers and partners in achieving their decarbonization and emission reduction objectives. With a legacy spanning back to its inception in 1940, Topsoe continues to be a beacon of sustainability, headquartered in Denmark and comprising a global workforce of over 2,800 dedicated professionals serving clientele across the globe.
