Sumitomo Chemical has announced a significant leap forward in sustainable polymer production, initiating the commercial sale of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) derived from chemically recycled methyl methacrylate (MMA) monomer. This breakthrough material is set to be adopted by industry giants LG Display and Nissan Motor, marking a pivotal moment in the drive towards circular economy practices within the electronics and automotive sectors.

The company's commitment to environmental responsibility is underscored by its investment in a pilot facility for PMMA chemical recycling at its Ehime Works in Niihama City, Japan, established in 2022. This facility has been instrumental in refining the chemical recycling process, which breaks down used PMMA back into its original MMA monomer, allowing for the creation of virgin-quality PMMA.

Sumitomo Chemical has also actively engaged in local initiatives to promote recycling, including a joint project with Niihama City to recycle PMMA protective partition panels, a common fixture during the pandemic. Furthermore, the company has supplied its chemically recycled PMMA as a raw material for acrylic jewellery produced by Star Jewelry Co., Ltd., demonstrating the versatility and appeal of this sustainable material across diverse applications.

To ensure transparency and credibility, Sumitomo Chemical has obtained third-party certifications, notably the ISCC PLUS certification, validating its commitment to sustainable sourcing and production through a mass balance approach. This certification signifies that the company adheres to rigorous standards for traceability and environmental impact reduction throughout its supply chain.

The company is now poised to scale up its production of chemically recycled PMMA, targeting applications that demand high quality and performance, such as electronics and automotive components. LG Display will incorporate this recycled PMMA into light guide plates for backlight units in liquid crystal displays, while Nissan Motor will utilize it for lenses in vehicle headlights. These partnerships highlight the growing demand for sustainable materials in high-tech industries.

Sumitomo Chemical's strategic shift in its petrochemicals-related business reflects a broader industry trend towards embracing circular economy principles. By focusing on technologies that minimize environmental impact, the company is positioning itself as a leader in sustainable polymer solutions. The increasing recognition of the value of recycled materials and products is driving this transformation, as companies and consumers alike prioritize environmental responsibility.

Looking ahead, Sumitomo Chemical plans to expand its chemically recycled MMA materials business, making these sustainable materials widely available through technology licensing. This initiative aims to accelerate the adoption of chemical recycling across the industry, contributing to the development of a more sustainable society.
