Sterlite Copper Plant’s Shutdown Spurs Hike in Sulphuric Acid and Phosphoric Acid Prices

Closure of Sterlite copper plant has resulted in a price hike of sulphuric and phosphoric acids, thereby affecting fertilizer and detergent industries. Prices of sulphuric acid surged 300% to INR12000/tonnes in 2018 from INR3000/tonnes in 2017 and phosphoric acid from INR43000/tonnes in 2017 to INR53000/tonnes in 2018, witnessing a rise of 23%. The plant was producing 1.2 million tonnes of sulphuric acid per year.
