Solugen Embarks on Establishment of Low-Carbon Chemical Plant in Marshall

Solugen, a Texas-based company at the forefront of sustainable chemical solutions, has embarked on a groundbreaking initiative with the commencement of construction on a new 500,000 square-foot, low-carbon chemical plant. This milestone was marked by a press conference held at the Red Baron Arena in Marshall, where Solugen unveiled its ambitious project.

Named Bioforge Marshall, the plant is poised to revolutionize chemical production by harnessing corn products from Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) to yield a spectrum of chemicals catering to various industries.

Gaurab Chakrabati and Sean Hunt, co-founders of Solugen, emphasized their unwavering commitment to exploring sustainable methodologies for chemical manufacturing, underscoring the pivotal role Bioforge Marshall plays in this mission. Marshall Mayor Bob Byrnes echoed sentiments of enthusiasm, lauding Solugen's investment in the local community and recognizing the significant economic and environmental implications of the project. State officials, including Department of Employment and Economic Development Commissioner Matt Varilek and Agriculture Commissioner Thom Petersen, voiced their support for the endeavor. Notably, the state has allocated $760,000 from the Job Creation Fund towards this initiative, further underscoring its significance on a broader scale.

Chakrabati provided insight into Solugen's evolutionary journey, tracing its origins back to research endeavors in medical and chemical engineering. Today, the company stands as a testament to innovation, boasting a workforce of over 200 individuals and specializing in the production of organic acids with diverse applications. The Bioforge Marshall plant is slated to provide employment opportunities for 50 to 60 workers and will rely on dextrose from ADM as a sustainable feedstock, aligning with Solugen's overarching sustainability objectives.

Construction efforts are already well underway, with over half of the plant's infrastructure currently being erected offsite. Looking ahead, Solugen plans to further diversify its product portfolio by leveraging enzyme-based processes at its Houston facility.
