Saldanha Iron-Ore Terminal to Undergo Maintenance Shutdown

The annual maintenance shutdown for the Saldanha Iron Ore Terminal (IOT) is set to commence on September 28, spanning a duration of 28 days. This comprehensive maintenance period will encompass various aspects of the terminal's infrastructure, including mechanical, electrical, and structural components. It's worth noting that this maintenance initiative will not only impact the terminal but also involve coordinated efforts with other key entities such as Transnet Port Terminals (TPT), Transnet Freight Rail, Transnet National Ports Authority, and bulk customers. A critical aspect of this shutdown is the temporary suspension of rail operations between the Northern Cape and the Port of Saldanha, situated in the Western Cape, as part of this integrated maintenance effort.

During the shutdown period, there will be opportunities for single offloading, allowing for the careful and efficient management of cargo. One of the significant maintenance tasks for this year's shutdown is the replacement of a substantial portion of the conveyor belt system, totaling 9.5 kilometers out of the 26-kilometer conveyor belt network responsible for transporting export iron ore. Additional work will be carried out on the rail infrastructure, encompassing civil repairs to Tippler 2, as well as maintenance activities on the ship loaders and the terminal's sub-station.

While ongoing maintenance is a regular feature of the terminal's operations, the annual shutdown serves a distinct purpose by facilitating tasks that cannot be accomplished during the routine 12-hour maintenance windows that occur weekly. This strategic approach enhances the reliability and performance of the terminal's equipment.

The Saldanha IOT is a pivotal component of South Africa's iron ore export infrastructure. It is the largest iron ore export facility in Africa and the nation's sole dedicated iron ore terminal. Remarkably, it accounts for approximately 96% of all iron ore exports from South Africa, with the remaining 4% being handled by the Saldanha multi-purpose terminal. Over the years, this terminal has played a significant role in the export of iron ore, with more than 1.3 billion tons of this crucial mineral having been shipped through its facilities to date.
