During the 2024 World Hydrogen Week in Copenhagen, Saipem and Nel ASA introduced the IVHY™ 100, an innovative 100 MW electrolyser concept that marks a significant advancement in renewable hydrogen production. This cutting-edge turn-key solution utilizes Nel’s atmospheric alkaline electrolyser technology, enabling a scalable and modular approach for large-scale systems.

The IVHY™ 100 is designed to enhance the installation and commissioning process, making it easier for companies to adopt renewable hydrogen solutions. Powered by Nel’s proven alkaline electrolysers, which have demonstrated exceptional durability, robustness, and energy efficiency over decades in the market, this technology stands out as an optimal choice for businesses looking to improve operational efficiency and reduce total ownership costs.

This project stems from a strategic partnership between Saipem and Nel. Nel will serve as the technology provider, offering its expertise in alkaline and PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) electrolyser technologies alongside various technical services. Meanwhile, Saipem will take on the role of engineering service provider and EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) contractor, overseeing the basic design, detailed engineering, procurement, and construction of the complete green hydrogen facilities.

Guido d’Aloisio, Chief Commercial Officer of Saipem, emphasized the importance of the IVHY™ 100 technology, stating, “This represents a significant step forward in promoting innovative and sustainable solutions in renewable hydrogen. Our goal is to address the growing demand for reduced carbon emissions across challenging industries by leveraging renewable hydrogen. Furthermore, we aim to develop hydrogen derivatives such as ammonia, methanol, and sustainable fuels.”

Håkon Volldal, President and CEO of Nel, expressed pride in the collaboration, highlighting Saipem's role as a leading EPC company contributing to the energy transition. He stated, “We are honored that Saipem has chosen Nel and our technology. This partnership simplifies the process of large-scale renewable hydrogen production, making it more accessible for industries aiming to transition to sustainable practices.”

The IVHY™ 100 is positioned to play a crucial role in the ongoing shift toward renewable energy solutions, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change. By facilitating the production of renewable hydrogen and its derivatives, this partnership aims to meet the increasing energy demands of various sectors while promoting sustainable practices.

As the world moves towards greener energy solutions, the collaboration between Saipem and Nel signifies a promising advancement in the hydrogen economy, with potential implications for diverse industries seeking to improve their sustainability initiatives and decrease their carbon footprints.

Saipem stands as a global leader in engineering and construction for significant projects within the energy and infrastructure sectors, encompassing both offshore and onshore operations. The company operates six fabrication yards and has an offshore fleet that includes 21 construction vessels. Of these, 17 are owned by Saipem, and four are owned by third parties but managed by the company. Additionally, Saipem has a total of 15 drilling rigs, with nine of them owned outright. With a strong focus on technological innovation, Saipem is dedicated to the mission of "Engineering for a sustainable future.
