Northern Graphite Corporation and Rain Carbon Inc. ("RAIN"), a prominent supplier of carbon precursor and products sourced from upcycling industrial by-products, have announced a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) aimed at creating advanced battery anode materials (BAM) for lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles.

As part of this agreement, Northern and RAIN will collaborate on the development and commercialization of natural graphite BAM products. These products are designed to enhance battery performance by extending cycle life, improving charging speed, and minimizing electrode swelling in lithium-ion battery cells. This innovative approach seeks to bridge the stability gap between natural and synthetic graphite, facilitating greater incorporation of natural graphite into electric vehicle battery cells.

The Joint Development Agreement (JDA) builds on recent advancements from both companies, following the launch of Northern's Battery Materials Group (NGCBM) in February and RAIN's establishment of its Technology Innovation Centre for Energy Storage Materials in August. NGCBM's initiative included acquiring a state-of-the-art carbon and battery laboratory in Frankfurt, Germany, equipped to produce battery anode materials (BAM) derived from Northern's Lac-des-Îles graphite mine in Canada. This facility can also manufacture lithium-ion batteries tailored to meet the specific requirements of automakers, focusing on critical attributes such as cycle life, driving range, and charging speed.

RAIN's Innovation Centre in Hamilton, Canada, facilitates the development of battery-grade carbon and carbon precursor products within a 30,000 square foot facility. This centre features demonstration plants for pilot-scale processing of carbon materials, as well as laboratories equipped for in-depth analysis of carbon materials. The labs include state-of-the-art powder and electrochemical testing equipment, supporting comprehensive product and application development activities.

"This exclusive Joint Development Agreement represents a significant milestone for both our companies and the broader industry," remarked Hugues Jacquemin, CEO of Northern. He highlighted that this collaboration would facilitate the increased use of natural graphite in battery anode materials, effectively lowering costs and addressing the environmental challenges linked to synthetic graphite. Furthermore, the initiative aims to enhance essential performance metrics such as cycle life, charging speed, and stability.

By leveraging Northern's extensive expertise in mining, milling, shaping, and purifying natural graphite alongside RAIN's advanced coating technologies, the partnership is strategically positioned to produce battery anode materials that are both lower in cost and higher in quality. This aligns with the growing demand from battery manufacturers and consumers for more sustainable and efficient solutions in electric vehicle and energy storage applications. Jacquemin expressed confidence that this collaboration will lead to innovative advancements that benefit the entire supply chain.

"We are thrilled to collaborate with Northern on this development project, which will enable us to enhance and customize our existing range of LIONCOAT® battery-grade carbon precursors," stated Gerard Sweeney, President of RAIN. He emphasized that this partnership will also drive advancements in new, efficient, and sustainable coating technologies through their Innovation Centre in Hamilton, Canada.

Sweeney noted that by merging their expertise in raw material integration and processing, the collaboration aims to produce high-performance battery anode materials. This effort is crucial for accelerating the development of innovative solutions in the rapidly expanding lithium-ion battery market, positioning both companies at the forefront of this critical sector.

The production of Battery Anode Material, crucial for lithium-ion batteries, involves applying a protective carbon layer to enhance stability and efficiency. As the world aims for a net-zero economy, battery manufacturers are increasingly focused on minimizing their carbon footprints, making sustainable natural graphite electrode materials vital for this transition.
