North Ammonia AS, a company focused on green ammonia production, has successfully applied for and been granted 171 MW of grid capacity designated for a large-scale green ammonia production facility in Eydehavn, situated outside Arendal.

Glitre Nett has reserved the network capacity, guaranteeing that Eydehavn Green Ammonia possesses ample capacity to produce approximately 145,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually.

North Ammonia is aiming to reach a final investment decision for the project by 2025, with production anticipated to commence in 2028.

" After starting the online connection application process in 2021, we are thrilled to have successfully secured this reservation. This achievement marks a significant milestone and provides a solid foundation for advancing the development of our facility in Eydehavn, further enhancing Arendal's appeal as a prime destination for green industrial development in Norway," stated Mikkel Tørud, General Manager of North Ammonia.

Headquartered in Arendal, North Ammonia strategically targets the burgeoning market for green maritime fuel, encompassing both Norway and North-West Europe.

In partnership with Arendal municipality, North Ammonia has commenced the development of the regulatory framework for the production facility. Additionally, the company will conduct essential impact assessments in collaboration with pertinent governmental entities and local stakeholders.

North Ammonia, established in 2021, is a Joint Venture equally owned by Grieg Edge and Vergia (a division of the Arendals Fossekompani group), aiming to drive transformation within the maritime sector. Grieg Edge serves as the specialized innovation arm within the Grieg Maritime Group, a longstanding family-owned enterprise tracing its origins to 1884. Vergia, on the other hand, operates under the umbrella of the Arendals Fossekompani group, an Oslo Stock Exchange-listed clean technology industrial investment firm established in 1896. The Arendals Fossekompani group is actively engaged in nurturing businesses and advocating for renewable energy initiatives, facilitating the transition to a sustainable green economy on a global scale. North Ammonia pioneers and develops projects aimed at producing green hydrogen and green ammonia for maritime clients. The strategy of North Ammonia involves leveraging its owners' industrial heritage and attracting suitable partners to position itself as Norway's foremost provider of green energy solutions for the maritime sector. Their inaugural project, the Eydehavn Green Ammonia — North Ammonia facility, is situated in Arendal, Norway. This initiative involves developing and constructing an electrolysis and ammonia plant, including a bunkering facility, directly at Eydehavn Port. Positioned strategically at the Eydehavn port, the facility occupies a spacious secured plot and has access to essential infrastructure. Its location provides direct access to maritime operational zones including the Skagerrak, Norwegian West-Coast, Southern regions, and Oslofjord. The green ammonia plant is scheduled to commence operations in 2027/28. North Ammonia aspires to emerge as the premier green ammonia provider in Norway, aligning with the Norwegian hydrogen strategy and the imperative to decarbonize maritime transportation.
