Neste and the Singapore Airlines (SIA) Group have inked a deal to acquire 1,000 tons of pure Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel™. This agreement positions SIA and Scoot, the two airlines within the Group, as the inaugural recipients of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) manufactured at Neste’s refinery located at Changi Airport in Singapore.

Neste will blend the SAF with conventional jet fuel to meet the necessary safety standards (The blended SAF fuel will adhere to the safety standards set by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), an internationally recognized benchmark for the quality of conventional jet fuel), and transport the blended jet fuel to Changi Airport's fuel hydrant system in two shipments: one in the second quarter of 2024 and another in the fourth quarter of the same year.

This achievement will also signify the initial direct provision of Neste's SAF to airlines at Changi Airport, highlighting their comprehensive SAF supply chain capabilities in Singapore. This development comes after the conclusion of the expansion of Neste's Singapore refinery in May 2023. With the capacity to produce one million tonnes of SAF annually, the refinery stands as the largest SAF production facility globally.

Derived from 100% renewable waste and residue raw materials, Neste's SAF reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% (The 80% reduction in lifecycle carbon emissions mentioned earlier pertains to the use of SAF in its pure form (i.e., unblended) and is determined using established life cycle assessment (LCA) methodologies, such as the CORSIA methodology. This calculation encompasses both production and transportation emissions) throughout the fuel's life cycle. When combined with conventional jet fuel, it seamlessly integrates with current aircraft engines and fueling infrastructure.

"This collaboration with Neste marks a significant step in the SIA Group's efforts to incorporate at least 5% sustainable aviation fuel into our overall fuel supply by 2030. Close partnership with our associates and stakeholders, both locally and internationally, is pivotal in our enduring commitment to decarbonization. A more sustainable aviation sector will safeguard the ability of future generations to enjoy the global connectivity, economic growth, and interpersonal bonds facilitated by air travel," stated Ms. Lee Wen Fen, Chief Sustainability Officer at Singapore Airlines.

"We take pride in serving Singapore Airlines and Scoot as our inaugural customers, benefiting from our comprehensive supply capabilities at Changi Airport. Supplying SAF produced locally to Changi Airport marks a significant milestone in our commitment to aiding the aviation industry and regional governments in meeting their emissions reduction objectives. Singapore stands as a prominent aviation hub in the Asia-Pacific region, and this provision of SAF, alongside the recently announced national SAF target, aims to inspire broader adoption of SAF across the Asia Pacific region. We eagerly anticipate further collaboration with Singapore Airlines and supplying visiting carriers at Changi Airport," stated Alexander Kueper, Vice President of Renewable Aviation at Neste.
