Neste is boosting its chemical recycling capabilities through a partnership with Tepsa Netherlands aimed at enhancing the storage and management of liquefied waste plastic at the Port of Rotterdam. This collaboration focuses on the installation of advanced aggregation tanks, demonstrating Neste’s commitment to expanding its liquefied waste plastic processing capabilities and promoting a circular economy. After successful industrial-scale processing runs, Neste plans to increase the use of liquefied waste plastic as a raw material at its Porvoo refinery in Finland, transforming it into Neste RE™, a high-quality recycled feedstock for producing new plastics and chemicals.

The aggregation tanks will be strategically situated in Rotterdam to optimize supply chains and enhance logistics efficiency. By securing a reliable supply of liquefied waste plastic from various suppliers across Europe, this key logistics hub offers seamless access to the continent's extensive infrastructure. The state-of-the-art tank solutions and their surrounding infrastructure are designed to ensure the safe and reliable storage of liquefied waste plastic. The preparation and installation of these tanks have been meticulously planned, reflecting the commitment of both companies to safety and operational excellence. The tanks are expected to be operational in the latter half of 2025, aligning with the ongoing construction of capacity upgrades for liquefied waste plastic at the Porvoo facility.

Andreas Teir, Head of Chemical Recycling at Neste, stated, “The new aggregation tanks in Rotterdam will optimize our supply chain and support our ambitious goals for processing liquefied waste plastic. We are actively expanding our network of suppliers for liquefied waste plastic, and this new storage facility significantly enhances our flexibility in offtake. It paves the way for a more sustainable and circular plastics economy, and we are eager about the opportunities this partnership brings.”

Bruno Hayem, CEO of Tepsa, emphasized that this collaboration marks a significant step forward in their long-term commitment to sustainability and energy transition. He noted, “By the second half of 2025, we will begin storing liquefied waste plastic, diversifying our product portfolio and reinforcing our leadership in the storage of sustainable, low-carbon products. This partnership builds on our existing collaboration with Neste and supports our strategy to broaden our service offerings while promoting a more sustainable and circular economy.”

Neste aims to process over one million tons of plastic waste annually, building upgrading capacities to handle 150,000 tons of liquefied waste plastic per year. The company is refining materials like liquefied waste plastic and discarded rubber tires into high-quality drop-in feedstock for new plastics production.
