Japan’s Mitsubishi Corporation stepped into a new project with PT Panca Amara Utama (PAU), Japan Oil Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOCMEG), and Indonesian Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) to innovate the manufacturing of Ammonia fuel from natural gas using carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology. The move is in support of Japan’s vision to increase the demand for Ammonia fuel to around 3 million tonnes in the next 10 years along with creating a sufficient supply chain for the fuel and combating climate crises.

These four parties are looking forward towards conducting a CCS feasible study in Luwuk, Mitsubishi Donggi Senoro LVG plant along with Central Sulawesi in the same province with a motive to store carbon dioxide generated during the Ammonia manufacturing phase.

As per a Mitsubishi spokesperson, their mission is to transform PAU’s Ammonia plant to manufacture 70000 tons of efficient and clean ammonia fuel a year and transfer the fuel to a coal fired plant in Japan.
