LR Awards AiP to SDARI for Innovative Ammonia-Propelled Boxship Design

Lloyd’s Register has granted approval in principle to SDARI, a prominent Chinese design firm, for its innovative ammonia-propelled 8,200 TEU containership concept. This milestone achievement stems from a collaborative effort involving Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) and MAN Energy Solutions (MAN E&S) within a joint development project. The containership design incorporates a 73,000 cubic meter Type C tank ammonia containment system, featuring a unique configuration with a dome positioned inside its tank connection space. Furthermore, the design integrates the MAN 6G80-C10.5-LGIA Ammonia-Fueled Engine, equipped with a high-pressure selective catalytic reduction (HP-SCR) system to ensure compliance with Tier II/Tier III emissions standards.
