KeyState Energy and CNX Resources, in collaboration with Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT), have unveiled plans to introduce a hydrogen facility at PIT, aiming to expedite the advancement of hydrogen and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) development, as per a press release dated May 15.

The facility is designed to have the capability to produce hydrogen independently, with an annual production capacity of up to 68,000 metric tons, or SAF solely, capable of producing up to 70 million gallons per year, as outlined in the release.

The proposed facility, with its substantial size and capacity, is anticipated to produce sufficient alternative fuel to replace nearly all conventional jet fuel consumption at PIT, while remaining competitively priced with traditional Jet A fuel, as stated by the collaborating companies.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro highlighted the significance of Pennsylvania's achievement in securing two regional clean hydrogen hubs, underscoring the potential for increased innovation, job creation, and opportunities within the state as these hubs expand over the coming years. Shapiro emphasized the collaborative efforts between KeyState Energy, CNX Resources, and Pittsburgh International Airport, emphasizing their role in generating employment opportunities and reducing fuel costs for airlines while simultaneously mitigating pollution and enhancing community well-being.

The companies projected that the estimated $1.5 billion project could create around 3,000 direct construction jobs during the development phase. This initiative represents a continuation of CNX and PIT's alternative fuel strategy announced in 2022, further solidifying their commitment to sustainability and innovation in the aviation sector.

Derived from diverse sources such as waste feedstocks, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) has the potential to significantly diminish the carbon emissions associated with air travel throughout its lifecycle, emerging as the most effective means for the aviation sector to achieve net-zero emissions. Nevertheless, despite its environmental benefits, SAF comprises less than one percent of global commercial airline consumption presently, owing to production constraints and cost considerations. The envisaged facility, given its size and capacity, would generate a sufficient volume of alternative fuel to substitute nearly all conventional jet fuel consumption at PIT (Pittsburgh International Airport), with pricing comparable to that of conventional Jet A fuel.

By incorporating just 10 percent sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) into conventional jet fuel, thousands of flights can be operated annually, resulting in a notable reduction in emissions. This integrated facility not only solidifies PIT's standing as a frontrunner in the industry but also enhances its appeal for both passenger and cargo flights.
