International Graphite has secured a pivotal $4 million grant from the Western Australian government to accelerate its commercial battery graphite production capabilities. The grant, awarded through the Investment Attraction Fund (IAF), is a significant boost to the company’s Springdale-Collie mine-to-market strategy, which aims to position Australia as a key player in the global battery material supply chain.

This funding comes as part of a broader effort to develop a reliable, sovereign supply of battery graphite, an essential material in the electric vehicle (EV) and renewable energy sectors. International Graphite has now raised $17.2 million in combined state and federal government support for its Springdale and Collie projects. The capital will be primarily directed toward bulk ore extraction from the Springdale deposit near Ravensthorpe and enhancing process development.

A standout element of the grant will fund the installation of Australia's first demonstration-scale spheroid Iser at the company’s processing facility in Collie. This cutting-edge spheroid Iser will significantly boost the plant’s capacity, raising its annual output of micronized graphite to 10,000 tonnes. This moves positions International Graphite to become one of the largest global producers of this key material outside of China, which currently dominates the global graphite supply chain.

The strategic development of the Collie plant aligns with growing global demand for high-performance materials, especially in the EV and renewable energy industries, where battery storage solutions are critical. As electric vehicles surge in popularity and renewable energy adoption expands, the demand for materials like graphite, used in battery anodes, is set to increase exponentially.

Andrew Worland, Managing Director of International Graphite, emphasized the importance of this support. "This grant demonstrates the WA government’s recognition of the critical need for locally sourced, sustainable battery materials. It’s a vital step in accelerating our mine-to-market strategy and reinforces Western Australia’s potential as a leading supplier to international markets," he stated.

The funding also ensures the company’s competitive edge in securing long-term contracts with customers in the rapidly evolving battery materials sector. By securing its supply chain, International Graphite positions itself as an essential player in the future of electric mobility and green energy storage.

International Graphite’s success at Springdale is bolstered by recent developments, including the granting of a mining lease for the Springdale Central deposit and a permit for the neighbouring Mason Bay discovery. These assets enhance the company’s resource base, reinforcing its status as one of Australia’s largest and most promising graphite producers.

As global demand for sustainable energy solutions continues to rise, International Graphite’s strategic expansions are poised to play a significant role in meeting future supply needs, further establishing the company as a crucial player in the global battery materials market.
