Hydrogen has the potential to be the most sustainable fuel and is an absolutely viable choice towards creating a green economy across the world. As stated in a recent interview by S S V Ramakumar, Director, Research and Development at IndianOil, the company is investing heavily in the research of mobility solutions such as Aluminium air batteries, H-CNG, Hydrogen fuel cell technology and has recently procured 15 Hydrogen fuel cell powered buses. The company is conducting massive trials in evaluating all aspects of Hydrogen-based fuel cell mobility and declares itself fully prepared for Hydrogen production. IndianOil is the largest Hydrogen producer in the country with 11 refineries spread nationwide. Each refinery unit has a huge Hydrogen generation capacity through production technologies based on fossil or semi-fossil sources. However, the company is tenaciously researching on producing green Hydrogen involving renewable feedstocks such as water, biomass or other organic wastes. To have a strong hold in sustainable fuel practices, the company was about to set up an H-CNG dispensing station but delayed its commissioning due to lockdown. As stated by S S V Ramakumar, if the company’s H-CNG experiment proves to be successful, the company would supply H-CNG to all CNG stations after required technology validation. The company’s H-CNG plant is ready and its trial is expected to start after the lockdown gets lifted.
