India is planning on taking measures towards increasing usage of Green Hydrogen in Refineries and Fertilizer plants as it strives to reduce carbon emissions as a part of its Hydrogen Policy which mandates a gradual increase in the use of Green Hydrogen in place of fossil fuels in refineries and fertilizer plants.

The draft policy has norms of Green Hydrogen to be accounting for 10% of the overall Hydrogen needs of refiners from the year 2023, rising to 25% in the next five years. The respective requirements for fertilizers are 5% and 20%.

India is also increasing its renewable energy capacity which currently stands at 92.97 GW to meet about two-fifths of its electricity needs by 2030 under the Paris Climate Agreement. India has targets of raising its renewable energy capacity to 175 GW by 2022 and 450 GW by 2030.

Green Hydrogen is the Hydrogen fuel which is manufactured from renewable resources. It is the cleanest fuel with zero carbon footprint. This is the reason why countries in Europe, Asia and North America are taking steps towards shifting to a Hydrogen based economy.

As per ChemAnalyst, “the proposed move by the Indian Government is aimed at gradual implementation of its Hydrogen Policy, as the world moves towards a less carbon future based on a Hydrogen Economy.”
