In Japan, a collaborative effort has been initiated by Idemitsu Kosan Co., Ltd., OPTC, and Marubeni Corporation to create a supply chain dedicated to biobased purified terephthalic acid (PTA). The primary objective of this partnership is to utilize PTA in the production of biobased polyethylene terephthalate (PET), with the inaugural plant set to commence operations in Taiwan later this year.

As per the terms outlined in the agreement, Idemitsu Kosan will take on the role of producing paraxylene from biobased naphtha, utilizing the mass balance method. Subsequently, OPTC, a PTA manufacturer within the Far Eastern New Century Group, will undertake the conversion of biobased paraxylene into PTA. Overseeing the coordination of the supply chain establishment and the marketing of biomass products will be the responsibility of Marubeni Corporation.

The utilization of the mass balance method by Idemitsu Kosan involves the production of paraxylene from renewable feedstock, offering a sustainable approach to the production of PTA. This method allows for the integration of biobased materials into the supply chain while maintaining a transparent and traceable system.

The purpose of this strategic partnership is to aid in lowering carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in the plastics sector, aligning with the wider objective of hastening the achievement of a society with low carbon footprint. By establishing this novel supply chain, the three companies anticipate making significant strides in advancing the sustainability agenda and promoting environmentally friendly practices within the plastics manufacturing sector.

In a joint press statement, the companies expressed their commitment to driving CO2 reduction and fostering a low-carbon society through the newly established supply chain. The emphasis on sustainability underscores the importance of industry-wide collaboration and innovation to address environmental challenges and transition towards more eco-friendly alternatives.

The impending launch of the first plant in Taiwan marks a crucial milestone in the implementation of this collaborative initiative. The partners envision that this concerted effort will not only contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions in plastics production but will also serve as a model for future sustainable practices within the broader petrochemical industry.

In conclusion, the collaboration between Idemitsu Kosan, OPTC, and Marubeni Corporation represents a significant step forward in the pursuit of sustainable solutions for the plastics industry. By establishing a supply chain for biobased PTA and promoting the use of renewable feedstocks, the partners aim to make tangible contributions to CO2 reduction and foster the realization of a low-carbon society. This innovative approach showcases the industry's commitment to environmental responsibility and sets a precedent for future endeavors in the realm of green and sustainable petrochemicals.
