Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) announced a strategic alliance between Mitsubishi Power and Hygenco Green Energies to jointly explore and develop green hydrogen/ammonia-fired gas turbine combined cycle (GTCC) power plants. This collaboration marks a significant step towards advancing clean energy solutions and reducing carbon emissions. With the support of JICA India, the partnership aims to deliver innovative and sustainable power generation technologies to both the Indian and global markets.

This partnership supports India's National Green Hydrogen Mission by advancing the development and deployment of green hydrogen and green ammonia. Hygenco will provide green fuel for Mitsubishi Power’s Gas Turbine Combined Cycle (GTCC) technology, catering to potential customers. Hygenco plans to establish scaled-up, commercially viable green hydrogen and ammonia production assets, either through a build-own-operate model or a gas-as-a-service approach. Mitsubishi Power is focusing on developing hydrogen and ammonia firing technologies to decarbonize existing GTCC plants by transitioning from natural gas to hydrogen and ammonia. The company has a strong track record with multiple global projects.

JICA made a strategic investment in December 2021 as a limited partner in the NEEV II Fund, managed by SBI Ventures Limited. Subsequently, in October 2022, NEEV II Fund made a significant investment in Hygenco.

Mr. SAITO Mitsunori, Chief Representative of JICA India, highlighted JICA's dedication to advancing green hydrogen technologies. He praised the collaboration between Hygenco and MHI as a model of international cooperation crucial for tackling climate change and fostering sustainable development. Mr. SAITO reaffirmed JICA’s ongoing support for the partnership and expressed anticipation for the positive impact generated through the JICA - Neev Fund co-creation platform.

Mr. Amit Bansal, CEO of Hygenco Green Energies, described the collaboration between Hygenco and Mitsubishi as a powerful synergy that combines Hygenco’s green fuel supply capabilities with Mitsubishi’s advanced technology. This partnership not only aims to enhance green hydrogen and ammonia solutions in India but also on a global scale. By aligning with the principle of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, which translates to "the world is one family," the collaboration reflects a shared commitment to tackling global challenges. Mr. Bansal expressed enthusiasm for leveraging their combined expertise to advance the decarbonization of power generation and contribute to a more sustainable energy future.

Mr. Prem Prabhakar, MD & CEO of SBI Ventures Limited, emphasized that the collaboration between Hygenco and Mitsubishi is poised to drive forward innovative and sustainable energy solutions. As the manager of the NEEV II Fund, an investor in Hygenco, he highlighted the critical role that investments in green hydrogen and ammonia production play in India's energy landscape. Such investments are pivotal for enhancing the country’s energy security, supporting its transition to cleaner energy sources, and achieving its environmental objectives.

Mitsubishi Power is at the forefront of decarbonization efforts by developing cutting-edge hydrogen and ammonia firing technologies for existing gas turbine combined cycle (GTCC) power plants. Through the strategic conversion of natural gas to hydrogen or ammonia fuel, the company is actively contributing to the global shift towards a low-carbon energy future.
