Hanwha Ocean Partners with MOL on Innovative Wind-Assisted LNG Carrier

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) and Hanwha Ocean have achieved a significant industry milestone by securing an Approval in Principle (AiP) from Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) for a groundbreaking LNG carrier design incorporating Wind Challenger technology. This collaborative effort represents a global first, as the vessel will be equipped with a wind-assisted propulsion system. The AiP signifies a crucial step forward in the development of environmentally sustainable and cost-effective maritime transportation solutions, as wind power integration offers the potential to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

The LNG carrier that has received the AiP and is designed for global LNG terminal access, with a cargo tank capacity of 174,000 cubic meters. It features two Wind Challenger sails, enhancing its operational efficiency. Detailed design work is now in progress for a new LNG carrier commissioned by MOL from Hanwha Ocean. The project aims for the actual installation of these advanced features, marking a significant step forward in the development of eco-friendly LNG transport solutions.

MOL, Hanwha Ocean, and ClassNK conducted a thorough risk assessment to secure this AiP, meticulously evaluating several critical factors. These included the strategic placement of sails, their potential impact on visibility, emergency operational procedures, and overall safety measures. The assessment also encompassed a detailed review of how sail installation affects the cargo tank. Gaztransport et Technigaz SA (GTT), the designer of the vessel’s cargo tank, played a crucial role in this evaluation. GTT confirmed that despite the additional stresses imposed by the sails, the structural safety and integrity of the cargo tank are fully maintained, contributing significantly to the successful acquisition of the AiP.

MOL has established a mid-to-long-term goal of reaching net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050, as outlined in the "MOL Group Environmental Vision 2.2." A crucial component of this strategy involves the "adoption of clean energy and the advancement of energy-saving technologies." To support this ambitious target, the group aims to deploy 25 vessels equipped with the Wind Challenger technology by 2030, and 80 vessels by 2035. This initiative is a significant step towards reducing the company’s carbon footprint and advancing its sustainability objectives.

The MOL Group is dedicated to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions within its operations and contributing to the broader societal goal of decarbonization. This commitment will be realized through the effective management and operational efficiency of its environmentally sustainable fleet, which features advanced wind propulsion technologies such as the Wind Challenger. By leveraging these innovative technologies, the MOL Group aims to drive significant progress in environmental sustainability and support systemic reductions in carbon emissions across the industry.
