Evonik, Successfully Commissions Brownfield Expansion of Sodium Methylate in Alabama

Adhering to the stress on increasing the usage of biodiesel for accomplishing the decarbonization goals, Evonik, a German specialty chemicals company, has been successful in expanding the production capacity of Sodium Methylate to 90,000 MT per year in Mobile, Alabama.

Evonik undertook this mega investment to expand and modify its product portfolio for delivering the best to its customers.

With expected increase in the demand for Alkoxides, Evonik is optimistic that it can solidify its foothold in North America with the strategic expansion of its operation units and logistics facilities.

Andreas Kripzak, Vice President & General Manager Americas for the Business Line Functional Solutions revealed that the company is very proud that it has been able to safely and successfully complete their planned expansion amidst the pandemic, while following all social distancing measures and required safety standards.

Sodium Methylate finds its important application in biodiesel where it is used as catalyst to accelerate biodiesel chemical reaction. With this expansion, Evonik clinches gains in biodiesel and tries to place a stronger hold on performance and life science markets with locally manufactured sodium methylate. Other than Alabama, Germany and Argentina are hotspots for producing sodium methylate for Evonik.
