Evonik Breaks Ground on Significant Silica Expansion at Charleston Site

Evonik, a global leader in silica production, has commenced a major expansion at its Charleston site in South Carolina's Berkeley County. This project will increase the production capacity of precipitated silica by 50%, addressing the rising demand for green tires in the U.S. tire industry. Guido Skudlarek, Evonik’s President North America, emphasized the strategic importance of North America for the company, stating, “This investment underscores our dedication to meeting regional growth and customer needs. We are committed to delivering innovative and sustainable solutions that benefit our customers.”

The expansion is part of Evonik’s broader strategy to strengthen its presence in the region and reaffirm its long-term commitment to the silica business. The project has been meticulously planned, supported by strong market demand, positive engineering developments, and collaboration with local authorities and site partners. According to Lauren Kjeldsen, Head of the Smart Materials Division, which includes the silica business, “Our Charleston site will become a key hub for sustainable silica products in North America, thanks to its strategic location, dedicated workforce, and advanced processing capabilities.”

The South Carolina Department of Commerce and Berkeley County Economic Development have provided investment incentives, further supporting Evonik’s decision to expand at the Charleston location. Kenneth Bittner, Vice President Tax at Evonik, highlighted the business-friendly environment in South Carolina as a key factor in selecting the site. Berkeley County Supervisor Johnny Cribb praised the project, saying, “Evonik’s expansion at Bushy Park in Goose Creek is a prime example of our thriving industrial sector. We look forward to the continued job creation and production in our community.”

In addition to the expansion, Evonik is contributing to the local community by donating to the Berkeley County School District’s Career & Technical Education Department to support manufacturing and automation courses. Sustainability is a central focus of this project. Emmanuel Auer, Head of the Silica Business Line, noted that the expansion aligns with Evonik’s sustainability targets and supports the Science Based Targets initiative. The project will also enhance local supply chains for the tire industry, introducing circular raw materials for the production of ULTRASIL® Silica, which is crucial for fuel-efficient tires that can reduce fuel consumption by up to eight percent.

Evonik has consistently invested in modernizing its silica production and expanding its global footprint, with the Charleston facilities being part of a network of 18 precipitated silica production sites worldwide. The company also produces fumed silica under the AEROSIL® brand and offers a variety of silica products for industries across the globe.
