DOE has made a significant announcement, unveiling the recipients of the inaugural American-Made Geothermal Lithium Extraction Prize. In a show of support for innovation and advancement in the clean energy sector, a substantial prize pool totaling $2 million has been allocated to three pioneering teams.

Lithium plays a pivotal role in the transition to clean energy. It is a fundamental component in the manufacture of high-performance batteries utilized in electric vehicles (EVs) and stationary energy storage systems. However, despite its critical importance, the United States currently relies heavily on lithium imports, with approximately 99% of its supply sourced from foreign countries. This overreliance on external sources poses economic and strategic vulnerabilities, emphasizing the urgent need to explore cost-effective and sustainable methods to harness domestic lithium resources.

One of the most promising avenues to accomplish this goal is the direct extraction of lithium from geothermal brines, a renewable and eco-friendly source of energy. Geothermal brines are saline solutions found deep underground, enriched with various minerals, including lithium, salt, and zinc. The specific composition of these brines varies depending on the geological characteristics and location of the source. However, they consistently present an abundant supply of lithium. The process of direct lithium extraction (DLE) from geothermal brines holds immense potential, as it offers a dual advantage: securing a domestic lithium supply while concurrently generating clean electricity from geothermal resources.

The DOE's Geothermal Technologies Office (GTO) recognized the critical importance of advancing DLE technologies and methodologies. To catalyze progress in this field, the office initiated the Geothermal Lithium Extraction Prize—a groundbreaking competition designed to foster the cost-effective development and scaling of DLE innovations. The competition spanned two years and was thoughtfully structured into three distinct phases, each strategically aimed at advancing the innovation and practical application of DLE technologies.

DOE's unwavering commitment to supporting the development of geothermal lithium extraction technologies aligns with broader national objectives.
