CWP Global and Corner Brook Port Sign MoU for Green Hydrogen Hub Gwinya

CWP Global, a leader in renewable energy and green hydrogen projects, has signed a collaborative agreement (MoU) with Corner Brook Port Corporation (CPBC).This strategic collaboration is set to assess the feasibility of Project Gwinya, a green hydrogen hub that aims to leverage up to 5 GW of wind energy for the production of green hydrogen and green iron.

Project Gwinya is strategically aligned with Canada's and Newfoundland and Labrador's economic and environmental objectives, promoting a sustainable avenue for economic growth and job creation. The green hydrogen hub, which includes a hot briquetted iron (HBI) plant at the Port of Corner Brook, is poised to deliver substantial long-term economic benefits to the region by invigorating local economic activity, generating new employment opportunities, and fostering regional development.

As global steel manufacturing is responsible for approximately 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions, green HBI stands as the foremost technological solution to shift steelmaking away from fossil-fuel-based iron reduction, aiding in the decarbonization of this vital industry. The production process for clean HBI necessitates green hydrogen. With Newfoundland and Labrador's exceptional wind energy potential facilitating efficient, low-cost, zero-emissions power generation, the province is uniquely positioned to be a key player in this green transition. The Port of Corner Brook is set to be integral to this endeavor, serving as a pivotal export hub for locally produced HBI, which will supply decarbonized iron to steelmakers in Canada and internationally.

Steve Delaney, Business and Development Manager (Hydrogen) at CWP Global, expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with the Port of Corner Brook on project Gwinya. The forthcoming phases of the project entail the formal submission of project registration, initiating the environmental assessment process, and undertaking a comprehensive feasibility study. This study will meticulously evaluate the proposed hub's various dimensions, including infrastructure requirements, logistical considerations, and economic implications.
