California Takes a Stand Against Harmful Chemicals in Processed Foods: Historic Ban Passes in State

US: A bill that would prohibit the utilization of harmful chemicals in popular food products sold throughout the state. This includes Brominated Vegetable Oil, Potassium Bromate, Propylparaben, Red Dye No. 3, and Titanium Dioxide, all of which have been linked to severe health issues such as an increased risk of cancer, nervous system damage, and hyperactivity.

The decision to follow Europe's footsteps and safeguard American consumers is a commendable move, despite the exaggerated objections raised by opponents who claim that the proposed legislation would lead to the prohibition of candy and other widely popular items in the state. It's worth noting that over 10,000 approx. chemicals are currently permitted for use in food items sold in the US, with almost all of those introduced since 2000 being approved by the food and chemical industry rather than the Food and Drug Administration, which is responsible for ensuring that our food supply is free from harm.

A new bill aims to address a concerning issue regarding the FDA's regulation of food chemicals. Despite recent studies highlighting the potential health risks associated with certain food chemicals, they have continued to be used in food products due to a loophole in oversight. While many food additives are considered safe, five specific chemicals covered by A.B. 418 have been linked to serious health concerns and were banned by the EU following a comprehensive safety evaluation in 2008.

The FDA has been unable to protect consumers from harmful food chemicals for years. Companies that produce these chemicals have been taking advantage of a legal loophole that permits the use of additives in food products without proper safety testing by the FDA. Moreover, the FDA has not been diligent in re-evaluating chemicals, even as new scientific research comes to light. The food and confectionery industries are aware of the broken review system at the FDA.
