Anglo American has taken decisive action to suspend production at its Grosvenor steelmaking coal mine in Queensland, Australia, in response to an underground coal gas ignition incident that occurred on June 29, 2024. Following stringent emergency protocols, all personnel were safely evacuated without any injuries. The company is actively collaborating with specialized teams from the Queensland Mines Rescue Service and regulatory authorities to extinguish the underground fire. They are also preparing for a thorough assessment before determining the conditions necessary for a safe resumption of operations.

Emergency protocols were promptly enacted, resulting in the safe evacuation of the workforce without any injuries. Collaborating closely with specialized teams from the Queensland Mines Rescue Service and regulatory authorities, the mine team is currently focused on extinguishing the underground fire and preparing for a safe re-entry into the mine. These comprehensive procedures are anticipated to span several months due to the extent of underground damage.

Anglo American’s steelmaking coal operations are slated to produce approximately 8 million tonnes of product in the first half of 2024, with Grosvenor contributing around 2.3 million tonnes. For the full year 2024, the steelmaking coal business originally projected a production range of 15 to 17 million tonnes, including an expected contribution of approximately 3.5 million tonnes from Grosvenor. This forecast reflects reduced production in the latter half of the year owing to a planned longwall move. Further updates on steelmaking coal production guidance will be communicated as additional details become available.
