Berry Global, a leading player in the packaging industry, has taken a significant step towards sustainability by implementing an innovative closed-loop system for the supply of its 20-liter Optimum stacking containers. These containers, crafted from recycled polyethylene (rPE), are at the forefront of the company's commitment to environmentally responsible practices. In collaboration with Ocedis, a renowned French water treatment specialist, Berry Global is set to provide these rPE containers for Ocedis' pH Minus Liquide, a product extensively used in both commercial and local swimming pools.

The entire process commences at Berry Global's Moirans facility in France, where the production of rPE containers takes place. These containers are subsequently transported to Ocedis' plant located in Trévoux, France, where they are filled with pH Minus Liquide. Following the filling process, the containers embark on a journey that embodies the essence of circular economy principles.

Once these containers have served their primary purpose and are emptied by customers, they do not meet the end of their lifecycle; instead, they become valuable assets in a recycling system carefully orchestrated by Berry Global and Ocedis. The empty containers are systematically collected and returned to Ocedis, forming an integral part of the closed-loop system. This marks the beginning of their transformational journey towards renewal.

The returned containers are subsequently transported to an undisclosed recycling partner, where they undergo a comprehensive and meticulous recycling process. This multifaceted procedure involves a series of essential steps. The containers are first subjected to thorough washing, ensuring that any residual substances are effectively removed. Following the cleansing process, the containers are then subjected to shredding, where they are broken down into smaller, more manageable components. Subsequently, these shredded materials undergo grinding, further refining them into finer particles.

One of the most crucial stages in this recycling journey is the conversion of the shredded and ground materials back into rPE pellets. This transformational process involves the reconstitution of the materials into small, pellet-like forms, ready to be utilized in subsequent manufacturing processes. These rPE pellets, now imbued with renewed potential, are then dispatched to Berry Global's Moirans facility.

At the Moirans facility, these rPE pellets find a new purpose and are reincarnated as the building blocks for the production of new Optimum containers tailored specifically for Ocedis. This remarkable regeneration process ensures that the rPE containers maintain their quality and performance, showcasing Berry Global's technical expertise and commitment to delivering sustainable solutions.

It is worth highlighting that these rPE containers have been subjected to stringent scrutiny and have received UN certification. This certification serves as a testament to the containers' safety and suitability for handling hazardous materials, reinforcing their reliability and credibility in various applications.

Moreover, these containers have been ingeniously designed with an interlocking top and base, enhancing their stacking capability. This feature not only maximizes pallet loads but also contributes to efficient and safe storage and transportation.

Romain Hardy, General Manager at Ocedis, has lauded this closed-loop project as a shining example of how effective circular solutions can be cultivated when all components of the supply chain collaborate seamlessly. This project showcases the potential for sustainable practices to drive meaningful change within the industry.
