Aramco Pledges $100 Million to KAUST to Foster Innovative R&D

Aramco, a top global integrated energy and chemical company, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) to back research focused on achieving environmental and commercial advantages.

Aramco plans to invest up to $100 million in research and development initiatives with KAUST over the next ten years. The funding will support a variety of initiatives, from fundamental research to applied technologies, as KAUST aims to advance the frontiers of science and innovation.

Amin H. Nasser, President & CEO of Aramco, stated: “This partnership will strengthen Aramco’s connection with KAUST, and we are eager to explore new opportunities and advancements with a strong emphasis on R&D and technology development. This reflects our deep conviction in the critical role of innovation across various industries and applications.”

Tony Chan, President of KAUST, commented: “This partnership highlights KAUST's commitment to advancing research that spurs technological progress and tackles real-world issues. By collaborating with Aramco, we will combine our expertise to create innovative solutions for a sustainable future.”

The collaboration will focus on energy transition, sustainability, materials transformation, upstream technologies, and digital solutions, with a strong emphasis on achieving commercially viable results.

Key topics in the energy transition sector include the conversion of liquids to chemicals, research on future refineries, and low-carbon aviation fuels. Sustainability research will cover hydrogen, carbon capture and storage, renewable energy, and energy storage solutions. Additional projects are anticipated to explore advanced carbon materials and geothermal energy, among other areas.
