AdvanSix, a prominent diversified chemistry firm, has received a grant of approximately $12 million from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) under the Fertilizer Production Expansion Program (FPEP). This substantial funding is aimed at enhancing the expansion of innovative American fertilizer production, thereby bolstering domestic supply chains and generating economic opportunities for U.S. businesses.

Mike Hamilton, Vice President and Business Director of Plant Nutrients at AdvanSix, expressed appreciation for the USDA’s recognition, stating, “We’re grateful to the USDA for acknowledging our potential with this grant and for the opportunity to make a significant impact on farmers across the country. This funding will play a crucial role in supporting AdvanSix’s strategy to expand our production capacity of premium-grade products and make meaningful investments to help nourish the world.”

The grant will advance AdvanSix’s Sustainable U.S. Sulfate to Accelerate Increased Nutrition (SUSTAIN) initiative at its facility in Hopewell, Virginia, where ammonium sulfate fertilizer is currently manufactured. The SUSTAIN initiative encompasses a series of multi-year projects aimed at achieving no net increase in energy consumption or emissions. These projects will build upon the facility’s nearly century-long legacy of supplying essential nitrogen-based fertilizers reliably, while maintaining a strong commitment to environmental stewardship.

The SUSTAIN initiative is projected to add approximately 200,000 tons of granular ammonium sulfate to the U.S. market annually. This increase will primarily result from enhanced granular conversion processes and improved shipping logistics for both rail and truck transportation. The expansion is expected to significantly boost domestic production capabilities and support the company’s ongoing efforts to provide high-quality fertilizers while minimizing environmental impact.

Overall, the USDA grant represents a significant investment in AdvanSix’s ability to drive growth and innovation in the American fertilizer sector, reinforcing its role in ensuring a stable and sustainable supply of vital agricultural products.
