ADM Acquires Corn Germ and Multi-Seed Crushing Facility in Hungary

On September 23, 2024, ADM announced that it had reached an agreement to acquire Vandamme Hungaria Kft, along with its associated entities, which manage a 700 metric ton per day non-GM crushing and extraction facility in northern Hungary. The facility, located in Komárom, was built in 2010 and processes soybeans and corn germ into meal and oils, serving customers across Europe and the Middle East. In 2023, the facility generated approximately €114 million in revenue and employs 38 people.

Sebastian Kuck, ADM’s general manager of EU soybean crush, emphasized the growing demand for non-GMO products, stating, “The enduring global trends of food security and sustainability are driving this demand, with 60% of European consumers in a recent survey expressing a preference for non-GMO labeling on product packaging.” Kuck explained that ADM’s acquisition aligns with its efforts to meet this demand. "We are investing to ensure we can meet the growing needs of our customers for non-GMO products," he added. This acquisition marks a significant step for ADM, further expanding its non-GMO soybean offerings, which currently come from facilities in Becej, Serbia, as well as Straubing and Mainz in Germany.

Kuck expressed excitement about adding the Komárom plant to ADM’s portfolio, describing it as a state-of-the-art soy and corn germ switch facility. This will enhance ADM’s capacity to meet the needs of its non-GMO customers across various sectors, including food, feed, pet, and oil markets.

Rene van der Poel, ADM’s commercial manager, highlighted how the acquisition also benefits European farmers. He noted that ADM’s growing footprint in the non-GMO soybean market provides an essential outlet for value-added crops, supporting crop rotation and promoting regenerative agricultural practices. “We’re proud to partner with farmers across Europe,” said van der Poel. “These investments not only add to our capabilities but also demonstrate our ability to meet diverse customer needs, especially as EU deforestation regulations come into effect.”
