Petronas Chemicals Group (PCG) Berhad and PCC are jointly planning to build an oxyalkylates plant in the Kertih Integrated Petrochemical Complex, Terengganu which would produce Ethoxylates and Polyether Polyols. The decision was taken followed by PCG’s acquisition of 50 per cent stake in the PCC’s Malaysian subsidiary PCC Oxyalkylates Malaysia Sdn Berhad (PCC-OM) in its bid to expand its specialty chemicals business segment.

The construction of the facility is likely to commence in 2021 with the production scheduled to start in 2023. PCG has taken this strategic step anticipating robust demand for these two chemicals. Oxyalkylates are a group of chemicals comprising ethoxylates, a non-ionic surfactant, and polyether polyols. Ethoxylates are widely used in the production of detergents, home and personal care items, while polyether polyols are mainly used in foam mattresses and upholstery applications. With this acquisition, both the companies will lend mutual support to penetrate the Asian markets and channelize their strengths in expanding their chemicals portfolios.
